Due to the requirement of the monopolized access to the drive, the CHKDSK cannot check the system disk in the normal system mode. Instead, the system sets a dirty bit to the disk volume and then reboots the computer. During the Windows start-up, a special version of CHKDSK called Autochk (a native mode application) is started by the SMSS.EXE and checks the drive if the dirty bit is set. .x and Windows 9x, this is a task done by Microsoft ScanDisk). The Windows Server version of CHKDSK is RAID-aware and can fully recover data in bad sectors of a disk in a RAID-1 or RAID-5 array if other disks in the set are intact. Thanks for a great article! It was a long time ago I had to use Windows computers so this guide helped me fix my daughters old crappy Windows laptop 🙂The only thing you did wrong was to have valuable information in exactly and only one place. You don’t have that information backed up. CHKDSK is a fine start. Depending on the value of the data you may end up needing a data recovery service. Good luck!I understand that the HDD has probably gone bad, but if you know the answer to the above question and let me know it, that would be much appreciated.

I don’t understand what you’re asking but chkdsk /F /R is exactly the same as chkdsk /R as /R includes /F. /F fixes index errors, while /R repairs index errors and bad sectors. That’s explained in the article.I was recently helping someone who had a problem with chkdsk running on every boot-up, despite the fact that the computer had been shut down properly and having let the scan run multiple times each time the computer was turned back on. However, to run one yourself the next time you reboot/restart your PC, the instructions are easily found amongst your Control Panel goodies. Just search ‘memory test’ there or Google or Yahoo it to find the correct procedures.First, be it known that I have my CP on the top level of my Start screen aps (I run an HP Pavilion 110-220 desktop PC w/ an HPw1907 19″ monitor screen using Windows 8.1 OS) so it is always handy for easy use. Next I left click CP and get the cool black w/ white text DOS screen.Macrium was not able to be used to backup the drive as it displayed an error message. This error message was present 1 year ago and was ignored as the C: was not having problems. The error message and code when decoded indicated that it had found a problem with the hidden partition. It requested labeling of the hidden partition and then to run chkdsk /r on the partition. So somehow on a 750 GB HD Macrium found a problem on 100 MB that was not detected by the other software drive tests.
I want comments to be valuable for everyone, including those who come later and take the time to read.C: is special. (More correctly, your system drive is special, but in most cases, that’s C:.) It went by so quickly I never got the actual number of the error. It said the CHKDSK couldn’t run because some “recently installed software” was preventing it from doing so. It wanted me to go through a system restore to get it back to a point where the scan could be free to run.
On Windows NT family, a standard CHKDSK scan consists of three phases of testing file metadata. It looks for errors but does not fix them unless it is explicitly ordered to do so. The same applies to surface scan—this test, which could be extremely time-consuming on large or low-performance disks, is not carried out unless explicitly requested. CHKDSK requires exclusive write access to the volume to perform repairs. There’s no way to know how long it will take. It depends on the speed of the drive and the USB interface. However, particularly when the ETA keeps changing upward, that may (I have to stress MAY) indicate that CHKDSK is fighting a bad sector or section on the disk. This is the full chkdsk that displays the errors found. It also includes the run of chkdsk /scan which fixed the errors. There was no reboot like with /f or /r. CHKDSK can be run from DOS prompt, Windows Explorer, Windows Command Prompt, Windows PowerShell or Recovery Console. Btw, I don’t know what software the error message could be referring to. By that I mean CHKDSK is supposed to handle CTRL+C or CTRL+Break gracefully. Do either of those and you should be just fine. Turn off the machine, however, and there’s no telling what might happen. I would advise running CHKDSK only when you know you can run it to completion, and never turning the machine off to forcibly stop it.

In computing, CHKDSK (short for "check disk") is a system tool and command in DOS, Digital Research FlexOS, IBM/Toshiba 4690 OS, IBM OS/2, Microsoft Windows and related operating systems. It verifies the file system integrity of a volume and fixes logical file system errors. It is similar to the fsck command in Unix and similar to Microsoft ScanDisk which co-existed with CHKDSK in Windows 9x and MS-DOS 6.x. Command Prompt isn’t DOS, but it’s definitely modelled after the DOS interface. DOS stands for Disk Operating System. (MS-DOS Being Microsoft Disk Operating System, and IBM’s PC-DOS being Personal Computer Disk Operating System). In this context the “disk” being referred to was the original floppy disk.CHKDSK D: /F This would check the D: drive, and if any errors were found, CHKDSK would attempt to repair them. There are no guarantees it is repairable. Chkdsk /r is the better choice when a drive is dropped as it repairs repairable sectors.
3. In the Right-click menu specify the disk, memory card or another removable disk which needs scanning for errorsWell, it means it’s not disk surface problem. This sounds like there’s a problem in the hardware connection to the drive — as in it’s intermittent or flakey. If it’s an external drive try a different port and a different cable. Try a different computer. If it’s internal you (or a tech) will need to check the physical connections to the drive.Did you reboot?
