The powertrain’s only vices are the faintest hints of four-cylinder booming in certain low-rpm, high-gear situations (entering a slight grade on the highway, for example) and the transmission’s insistence on passing through fifth gear during full-throttle downshifts. Floor the gas pedal while at a cruise, and the transmission will drop from seventh, eighth, or ninth gear all the way to third—but not before briefly hanging up at fifth. We fully expect that 99 percent of E-class buyers won’t notice or care, even if the foible adds a short delay to red-mist passing maneuvers, as does the mass of the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive hardware.

I thought the previous model was far better looking, at least on the exterior. This one simply screams “budget Mercedes”. This new version of the E-class is not so quick, but it is slightly larger, both in wheelbase (2.5 inches) and overall length (1.7 inches), which bumps the rear-seat space up to near the class leaders, but it’s still just shorter than the Audi A6. The new E-class also delivers a stellar automated driving experience. Mercedes’ latest iteration of semi-autonomous tech is as useful as that in any new vehicle. The Drive Pilot features come as part of a $10,400 options package that runs to 11 lines on the window sticker—on top of our test car’s $55,575 base price.
